Countdown to Hastings …

The 93rd Tradewise Hastings International Chess Congress will open on 28th December 2017 at Horntye Park, Hastings. The opening ceremony will be attended by Cllr. Peter Chowney, Leader of Hastings Borough Council and Cllr. Judy Rogers, Right Worshipful the Mayor of Hastings.

The Masters sees Indian grandmaster Deep Sengupta returning to defend his title.  Hastings has seen the launch of many chess careers over the years – now well-known names include Nigel Short, Michael Adams, David Howell, Stuart Conquest, Evgeny Bareev, Sergei Karijakin and Judit Polgar. Although the calendar is getting rather crowded at this time of year, the 9-round Masters tournament is still a good opportunity for norms, and we hope this will encourage players to enter.

The John Robinson Trust has generously offered sponsorship of bursaries to be awarded to English junior players to enable them to take up the opportunity to play in the Masters.

As well as the Masters event, there are short five-round Christmas and New Year events, and a two-day Weekend Congress. The Open section is FIDE-rated.

The event is once again sponsored by Tradewise Insurance Services and Hastings Borough Council with additional support from the White Rock Hotel, the Lansdowne Hotel, the John Robinson Youth Chess Trust, the Power family and KC Computers.
