RIP John Calvert

We were also saddened to hear that John Calvert had died. He was a regular at Hastings for many years and a familiar face at many other events. He was born in Hampshire but moved to Nottingham and lived initially with a Polish family. It was they who introduced him to chess. He joined the Nottinghamshire Mechanics Institute Club and also stood as LibDem candidate for Nottingham Council. He was a kind person who always enquired about everyone’s well-being and kept the arbiters and organisers supplied with chocolates and oranges. We will miss him.

From Neil Graham — John passed away without anyone to organise his funeral and I have now opened a JustGiving page so his colleagues in chess and politics can contribute to a proper cremation not at public expense – https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/neil-graham-1
